Keri

Hi everyone, I would like to introduce myself to those who only know me by my nick on #cancer-survivors. My name is Helene G. Spaulding, born 9/2/32 in Yonkers, N.Y. I lost my husband Bob to a massive heart attack on 9/24/89. My family now consists of my two daughters, Diane and Nance and my grandaughters (Alexandra and Adrienne). I married Richard (pictured with me) on 4/7/92. Also, but not forgotten a Boston Terrier named Holly. My nick comes from my daughters Boston Terrier, Keri.

My story begins in 1989 with many visits to many doctors, with me insisting something was terribly wrong. As many others have been this route, NONE, would hear me. Finally, I met Dr. Jeyalingam who took me seriously enough to look at the spot in my throat that I had been so worried about and........ BINGO!

A total of six visits were made about my throat in February of 1989, without any diagnosis, much less anyone taking me seriously. Got the "IT'S ALL IN YOUR MIND, YOU'RE A HYSTERICAL FEMALE, GO HOME AND FORGET ABOUT IT. This continued with another eleven visits to various doctors in the state of New York. Finally, on 3/23/89, Dr Jeyalingam did a Microlaryngoscopy and biopsy of the Larynx. The diagnoses was Supraglottic Carcinoma - Larynx. Beth Israel Hospital, NYC, I saw Dr Anand, ENT and Dr Vikram, Oncology. I started Radiation at Beth Israel. 23 treatments under the direction of Dr Vikram. Continued radiation at Newburgh, NY for 12 treaments. Total absorbed dose (RADS) 7,000 - Cobalt.

So far, so good, with microlarynogoscopy every year. After having my vocal cords scraped to the point where they no longer meet, I have been told that there is no reason for the Doctor to have done all that, and I have a terrible mess. After researching corrective surgery options, I have been told there isn't anything that can be done now.

Long story folks, but important lesson for all who suspect cancer. Don't give up searching for that doctor who will listen. Hugs all, Helene (Keri)
